Norton family papers, 1845-1871.

Primarily family correspondence between members of a Suffield, Connecticut, family. Daniel Norton received letters from his wife, Mindwell, their children and his Pease in-laws, with a few business letters included, which addressed him as Chairman. Daniel's papers also include household bills and receipts, promissory notes, and dividend statements, circulars and correspondence from various insurance companies, including Aetna Life, Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co., and Charter Oak Fire and Marine Insurance Co. Of interest among the bills and receipts is one issued to a person purchasing shares is the Suffield Gold, Silver & Copper Mining Co. of which Norton was the treasurer. Lucy Norton is represented by incoming correspondence, as are Mary Ellen (who later married George Loomis) and Elizabeth Norton (who later married Calvin Philleo). Mary's letters in large part came from a teacher at Holyoke Seminary, H.N. Fletcher. Her papers also include a number of essays written, perhaps while she was a student at Holyoke.
